HAY: An
important part of your horse's diet
BY R.G.
GODBEE of University of Nevada-Reno
and J.T. POTTER of North Carolina Cooperative Extension
In any feeding program, roughage
should comprise the majority of a horse’s diet. Most
nutritionists and veterinarians suggest roughage make-up over 50
percent of the daily intake. One easy rule of thumb is to insure
the horse receives at least 1 percent of their body weight in
forage per day. Dry forage, primarily hay, is the most common
form of roughage given to horses in confinement. In fact, some
performance and most halter horses are not allowed to graze. For
many horse owners, finding and purchasing quality hay becomes a
never ending task. (MORE)
Editorial: Step
forward
BY KRISANN
BLACKWELL
In a cozy stall somewhere in North Carolina, a middle aged
gelding is undergoing a huge transformation — years of neglect
had taken their toll on his frail body but the slow and careful

he is discovering for the first time the gentle hand of a human
who cares.
Despite what he’s been through, he is one of the lucky ones. (MORE)

kindness would not only save the lives of Crystal’s Fleeting
Moment and her yet to be born siblings, it would save the lives
of eight other horses in her herd months later.(MORE)

Volunteers teach
campers
BY ASHLEY
THOMAS
In the NC Piedmont Region of
the United States Equine Rescue League, we have been working
very hard to educate kids on horse care and about the USERL. To
do so we have had three different groups of summer camp kids
come to Regional Director Darlene Kindle's barn. We would rather
educate the kids than just let them go through life trying to
understand these magnificent creatures and what the USERL is
trying to do for them.(MORE) |
